Mercer Island offense powers past Lake Washington | Prep football

In their first KingCo game of the season, Mercer Island?s offense helped the team power past Lake Washington to a 42-13 win.

The Islanders, now 2-1 this season and 1-0 in KingCo action, started the evening with a quick touchdown from Risley Lesko after about a minute of play. It was followed by another Lesko visit to the endzone with 6:23 left to play in the first. The Islanders scored another with 20 seconds on the clock and led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Going into the second quarter, Mercer Island?s Peter Mahony was quick to add his own points, scoring off a 9-yard run to make it 28-0. Lesko followed Mahony?s performance with his third touchdown of the night, making it 35-0 for the Islanders going into halftime.

Lake Washington kicked a few things into gear in the second half, making notable improvements and gaining traction on the field. The Kangs were helped by a slew of flags against the Islanders in the third quarter, eventually creeping up to the 4-yard line and after a stalled first attempt, scored on a short run by quarterback Shawn Gray as time ran out in the third quarter. The score was 35-7.

After regaining possession in the fourth quarter, the Islanders progressed to 10-yard line and Lesko made his fourth touchdown of the night with 11:13 left in the game. The score was 42-7 for the Islanders.

Flags continued to rain down in the final minutes of the game, which Islanders head coach Brett Ogata attributed to losing focus as the game wore on for both teams. Penalities and opportunities for Lake Washington put the Kangs in scoring position part way through the fourth and with 9:16 left to play, the Kangs hit the mark for the second time, upping the score to 42-13.

Overall, Ogata said following the game, the offensive line deserved a ton of credit for making it possible for the receivers to hit their marks and score.

The Islanders will return to Islander Stadium next Friday, Sept. 21 to take on Sammamish High School. Lake Washington will travel to Bellevue next Friday. Both games have 7 p.m. start times.
