Baby found alive in Indiana field after storms

(AP) ? A baby girl was found alone and alive in an Indiana field 10 miles from her home after violent storms spawning twisters swept through the Midwest and South, officials said.

The baby, who was not identified, was in critical condition at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky., said spokesman Brian Rublein. Family members were with her, but he would not provide more details.

Authorities were still trying to figure out how the baby ended up in the field alone. It was not immediately known whether a tornado swept the girl up from her home, and if so, if any other family members were injured in the storms.

The child's family is from New Pekin, Ind., about 10 miles south of where the child was found, said Melissa Richardson, a spokeswoman for the hospital in Salem, Ind., where the girl was first taken.

Friday's massive tornado outbreak killed more than 35 people in several states and left behind scenes of destruction across the regions including shredded homes, downed power lines, splintered trees and streets and fields littered with cars and other debris.

Four people were killed in Washington County, Ind., where New Pekin is located, authorities said.
