Sexual Orientation I sound like a bisexual, don't I - Empty Closets - A ...

Lately, I've had these unbelievable fantasies of being with a guy. Like really attracted, it would feel so good, etc. I could have sworn I was turning gay. Thing is, I never even acknowledged my attractions to men before because I was so attracted to women. But now, being in a highly sexual relationship with a woman for the last 3 years, my gay side has started to come out. I came out to myself about a week ago. There are butterflies in my stomach around guys, and definite sexuality.

Thing is, today, I'm thinking if I have a sexual relationship with a guy, after a bit, when the newness wears off, I would desperately miss the sexuality of a woman. So is my thinking. The way she moves, her curves, her softness, her sweet voice/song. I have always adored that so much. I just realized that after fantasizing about guys a lot recently, but also thinking of bisexual encounters.

That maybe I'm not going in the gay direction, but really, that I'm with a woman all the time and that maybe I miss the bi side of me. Cuz thinking about it, I think if I didn't have a woman, I'd probably crave that sexually more than anything else in my life.

Does that make me bi? I would think even split down the middle, but since I have a woman right now, the male fantasy is really driving me. Without a woman, I LOVE the female fantasy very much, and I always have. So I think, but it's been a long time since I've even been single. And I've never even acknowledged my bisexuality before this. Never even occurred to me I could be bi/gay/whatever.

Drones over America: How unmanned fliers are already helping cops

It was getting dark, and the sheriff of Nelson County, N.D., was in a standoff with a family of suspected cattle rustlers. They were armed, and the last thing anybody wanted was a shoot out.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which monitors police radio chatter, offered to help. Their Predator was flying back to its roost at the Grand Forks Air Force base and could provide aerial support. Did the sheriff want the assist?

Yep.

"We were able to detect that one of the sons was sitting at the end of the driveway with a gun. We also knew that there were small children involved," Sheriff Kelly Janke told NBC News, remembering that tricky encounter in the early summer of 2011. "Someone would have gotten seriously injured if we had gone in on the farm that night." He decided to wait.

The next day, the drone gave them an edge again by helping them choose the safest moment to make a move. "We were able to surprise them ? took them into custody," Janke said. They also collected six stolen cows.

Rodney Brossart, the arrested farmer, sued the state, in part because of the cop's use of a drone. But a district judge ruled that the Predator's service was not untoward.

When advocates express concern about government drones threatening people's privacy, the Brossart case is one they bring up. It's one of the first instances of a flying robot doing a cop's dirty work, and this kind of intervention is likely to be more and more commonplace, as the FAA fulfills a congressional mandate to increase its granting of drone permits ? certificates of authorization, or COAs.

Cops and flying robots
At the moment, there are only 327 active COAs, all held by these organizations, and all for unarmed crafts, of course. A tiny sliver of these permits are in the hands of law enforcement agencies, and from them, we're seeing the first glimpses of drone use in policing and emergency response.

"The FAA has approved us to cover a 16-county area," Sheriff Bob Rost of Grand Forks County, N.D., said of their COA. "To look for missing children, to look for escaped criminals and in the case of emergencies." In the spring, they will use two mini-copter drones ? a trusty DraganFlyer X6 and an AeroVironment Qube ? to check on flooded farms.

The police department in Arlington, Texas, also recently got FAA clearance to fly their drones after two years of testing. The two battery-powered Leptron Avenger helicopter drones won't be used for high-speed chases or routine patrol, the department explains. In fact, the crafts will be driven in a truck to where they're needed, and when they're launched to scope out incidents, local air traffic control will be informed.

In Mesa County, Colo., the police department has used drones to find missing people, do an aerial landfill survey and help out firefighters at a burning church. For them, it's seen as a cost-cutting technology.

"It's the Wal-Mart version of what we'd normally get at Saks Fifth Avenue," said Benjamin Miller, who leads the drones program in Mesa County, comparing drones to manned helicopters that would otherwise give police officers help from the sky.

In Seattle, the police department received an FAA permit ? but had to give back its drones when the mayor banned their use, following protests in October 2012.

Protests and red tape
"Hasn't anyone heard of George Orwell's '1984'?" the Seattle Times quoted a protester as saying. "This is the militarization of our streets and now the air above us."

Protesters, not just in Seattle, seek more legal definition of what a drone can or can't do, and debate whether or not current laws sufficiently protect citizens from unauthorized surveillance and other abuses.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg thinks of police drones as an inevitability ? "We're going to have them," he recently said in a radio interview ? while those on the police (and drone) side say the fears are unfounded.

"This hysteria of [a drone] hovering outside your backyard taking a video of you smoking a joint, it's just that ? hysteria," said Al Frazier, an ex-cop from Los Angeles who is now an assistant professor of aeronautics at the University of North Dakota, and a deputy at the Grand Forks sheriff's office.

The reason the sky isn't lousy with drones already mostly has to do with red tape. The FAA's highly restricted drone application for government agencies is supposed to take about 60 days, though unofficially, we're told it's much longer. COAs are also very strict about where, when and by whom a drone is flown.

"I think there are many agencies who would like to use [drones] for public good, but they're stymied by the process," Frazier said.

That's likely to change ? and soon. Last February, Obama signed a mandate that encourages the FAA to let civil and commercial drones join the airspace by 2015. This will take new regulations from the FAA for safe commercial drone flight, and it may take some convincing of local anti-drone activists (who sometimes don't differentiate between drones great and small). It may even require the passing of a few new privacy laws.

Folks like Frazier and Miller don't see the permit process getting easier any time soon but eventually ? inevitably ? and for better or worse, your local police department will get its drone.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero said Alford is "the perfect fit for UCLA" because he connects with a new generation of players and brings an up-tempo and team-oriented style of play to Westwood.

The 48-year-old coach succeeds Ben Howland, who was fired last weekend after 10 years and a 233-107 record that included three consecutive Final Four appearances and four Pac-12 titles. The Bruins were 25-10 this season, which ended with a 20-point loss to Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Alford led New Mexico to a 29-6 record this season that included the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles. But the Lobos were upset by Harvard in the second round of the NCAAs shortly after Alford's new deal with the school had been announced.

Alford will be introduced at UCLA on Tuesday.

"I have been so fortunate and blessed in my life, and an opportunity to lead one of the greatest programs in college basketball history is once-in-a-lifetime," he said in a statement.

Alford had a 155-52 record in six years at New Mexico, with the Lobos making three trips to the NCAA tournament. He was selected Mountain West coach of the year three times.

His other head coaching stints were at Iowa (2000-07), Missouri State (1996-99) and Manchester College (1992-95) in his native Indiana.

Alford is a legend in the Hoosier state, where he starred at Indiana University from 1984-87 under coach Bob Knight. The Hoosiers won the national championship in his senior year. He also played on the gold medal-winning 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team in Los Angeles as a college sophomore. Knight coached that team.

Alford was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in 1987 and played four years in the NBA before starting his head coaching career at tiny Manchester.

Add a Detachable Microphone to Your Over-the-Ear Headphones

Add a Detachable Microphone to Your Over-the-Ear HeadphonesWhether you're digging into a long gaming session or just looking for a better way to video chat on your PC, a headset with a microphone can go a long way. If you don't want to plop down the cash for one, you can add one to your existing over-the-ear headphones yourself.

This particular mod uses a pair of cheap Monoprice 8323 headphones, but you could probably perform the process on any set of cans (though the more expensive your headphones, the less we'd recommend breaking them open). You'll need a bit of electronics experience to make this work, and the instructions aren't incredibly detailed, but if you know what you're doing they're pretty easy to follow. When you're done, you'll have a cheap gaming headset with a completely detachable microphone.

Of course, if you really want the features a good headset can offer, check out our roundup of the five best gaming headsets. Hit the link for the full set of instructions.

Contemplating Privacy and Radio Communications 5 - The Silicon ...

Something I neglected to cover yesterday - not deliberately; I just couldn't find reference details for it - is how resistant to interference or jamming these digital modes are.? I can tell you they won't be as resistant as a specially designed communications data link because they just don't have all the attributes of one, but I can't give you numbers for how resistant they are.? Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of operating experience with the various wider band/faster amateur digital modes.? Also, the exact effect of an interferer or jammer would depend on what sort of radio system we're using, FM or Single Side Band (SSB).? An SSB radio has the effect of taking the modulation band we produce at audio and converting it to a small band of radio frequencies, wherever we choose to place it.

Jamming is complex phenomenon, but it usually works by overloading the radio; exposing it to a signal so strong that some part of the radio can't respond properly.? Some systems are easier to jam than others, but basically older modulation forms (AM and FM) are easier.? Depending on the modulation mode and type of jammer, it can cause the detector to just respond to the jammer.? AM radios will receive everything on the channel they're tuned to, and make annoying squeals and squawks.? FM radios have a limiter that amplifies everything to high level, and in doing so, "captures" the stronger signal.? Even a slightly higher signal level can dominate the audio delivered to the speaker.? (In an engineering lab I worked in, ages ago, one of the guys hated the music another guy tuned in on his FM radio.? His answer?? Put a signal generator on that FM frequency and stick a small wire in it's output connector as an antenna.? The generator's unmodulated output made the FM receiver produce no audio output).? The weak point of jammers is that they need to either put lots of power everywhere, or they need to some power on frequencies they know an "enemy" is using.? The second one is much cheaper and easier.?

In the case of these complex MFSK modes, especially the ones with error coding like Olivia or MT63-2000, I imagine they'd be rather resistant to jamming, because they're designed to be resistant to interference.? Some jammer effects can probably be made up by error correction.? They'd need to wipe out the entire audio passband.? I believe it would be easier to find and jam a narrowband FM system running these modes than to find and jam an SSB system running the same modulation.? (This page has tabs for many of these modes that lead to descriptions of how they work).

True story about jammers.? I heard this as hall talk, I did not see it with my own eyes, but have no reason to doubt it.? Major Southeast Defense Contractor made an AJ (Anti-Jam) modem for the military. ? The buyers specified a variety of jammers it would be tested against, with very specific parameters.? Late in development, after all these specified tests were all passed, someone happened to turn on a Dremel Moto-Tool next to the system while it was passing data.? The Dremel completely jammed this complex, multimillion dollar data link better than all of the jammers specified by the customer.?

I tell this to bring up a simple point: jamming can work both ways, just like tracers.? It's not just simple systems that can be jammed by simple methods. ? I'm picturing a huge Dremel now... maybe 40 feet tall... just kidding.? Maybe a TIG or MIG welder.? But with online stores selling GPS jammers, movie theaters adding cellphone jammers, and other electronics stores selling jammers of all types, it is becoming a rather brave new world these days, isn't it?? I've heard of people going down the highway, with their in-dash or other GPS receiver telling them when the next turn is coming, suddenly losing their GPS link when a truck or panel van goes by.?

(an FM broadcast jammer schematic.? Takes out the entire FM band.? Quite illegal.? Not responsible for you.? Educational use only.? YMMV.? Do Not Remove This Mattress Tag.? Blah blah blah)

Probable conclusion tomorrow...

BionicOpter dragonfly drone flutters about, blows minds

Festo isn't quite the household name that Boston Dynamics is. (And, really, we're not entirely sure Big Dog is a regular topic of conversation at dinner tables yet.) But, it certainly deserves just as much attention for the work they're doing with robotics. After crafting a machine last year that soared around like a herring gull, now the company has created BionicOpter. The 17.3-inch long dragonfly drone can flutter through the air in any direction, and even hover, just like its biological inspiration. Its four carbon fiber and foil wings beat up to 20 times per-second, propelling it through the air as if it were swimming rather than flying. Actually piloting the robo-bug is achieved through a smartphone app, but an on-board ARM-based microcontroller makes small adjustments to ensure stability during flight. There are a few important pieces of information we don't have just yet. For one, it's not clear how long the two-cell lithium ion battery will last, and pricing or availability are missing from the brochure (at the source link). Chances are though, you'll never be able to afford one any way. Thankfully you can at least see this marvel of engineering in action after the break.

(AP) ? The putter D.A. Points once took from his mother paid off nicely for him Thursday in the Houston Open.

Points opened with five straight birdies and wound up with an 8-under 64 on a pleasant morning with only moderate wind at Redstone Golf Club. He had a one-shot lead over Cameron Tringale and afternoon starter John Rollins with the late groups still on the course.

Rory McIlroy, in his final start before the Masters, was 3-over par after a double bogey on the par-5 eighth, then rallied for a 73 in his afternoon round.

Points first borrowed the Ping Anser from his mother during his junior years in Illinois, and like most golfers, he abandoned it once he stopped making putts. But he recently asked Ping to clean it up for him and add some weight. He also got a putting lesson ? no, not from Steve Stricker ? and he was on his way.

"Maybe I'm an idiot for not having used this putter the whole time," Points said. "It worked well today."

Points, whose only win came with actor Bill Murray at his side at the Pebble Beach National Pro-am, made all five of his opening birdies from inside 15 feet. He dropped only one shot along the way.

Angel Cabrera of Argentina, a two-time major champion who lives in Houston, was in the group at 66.

Phil Mickelson was at 4 under and right in the mix until he hit his tee shot into the water on the sixth hole and made double bogey, nearly hooked a 3-wood into the hazard on the next hole and three-putted for bogey, and then made bogey on the par-3 ninth from a bunker to wind up at 72.

"It was a disappointing finish," Mickelson said. "I feel really good with the putter, and I believe that as the tournament goes on, I'll get better."

Mickelson played with defending champion Hunter Mahan, who didn't hit the ball his best and it finally caught up with him at the end for a 74. Also in the group was Geoff Ogilvy, who needs to finish in the top 50 in the world to get into the Masters. Ogilvy is currently at No. 50, though he will lose spots through the formula this week. He had three penalty shots in his round of 73.

Lee Westwood hit two shots in the water and still salvaged a bogey and was in the large group at 68 that included Riviera winner John Merrick and Jimmy Walker.

Charles Howell III had a 69 in his bid to get into his hometown major at Augusta National. Howell would need to finish at least in fourth place alone to have any chance of moving into the top 50.

For Points, Tringale and so many others, they need a win to get into the Masters.

Points was just trying to see some reasonable results, having made only two cuts all year. He did manage to join a group of stars in the Tavistock Cup earlier this week, and upon leaving home for Tuesday, he grabbed a handful of putters. One of them once belonged to his mother.

Ping rep Matt Rollins had some weights added to the putter, and equally important was an impromptu lesson from Lamar golf coach Brian White.

"It's one of those things," Points said. "I holed some nice par putts yesterday in my pro-am. I didn't hit it great, but I made a few good putts and the ball was going in the hole with nice pace and rolling real tight. And I thought, 'All right, this might be the key that kind of gets me going.'"

That it did.

Mickelson, meanwhile, was going along nicely despite some errant tee shots, such as his one on the 12th hole. He sliced the tee shot so far left that it bounced off the cart path, across the 13th tee box and down a slope toward the bushes. He was about pin-high, only 100 yards left of the green. He hit wedge into about 15 feet and turned to the gallery and said, "It's all about angles."

The angles caught up with him. Mickelson tee shot on the sixth never cleared the water, leading to his sloppy finish.

Mickelson enjoys playing the Houston Open before the Masters, but this is a different year. Because of the way the calendar falls, the Masters is a week later, and Houston is now two weeks before the first major of the year. This is only the second time in the last 15 years that Mickelson won't be playing the week immediately before Augusta.

Lefty also plans to skip the week before the U.S. Open.

"It's a very unusual situation for me here," he said. "I usually like to play the before. I'm going to have to learn how to do that, now that we're not really having tournaments conducive to getting ready for those events. This is a good opportunity for me to work on getting prepared properly in another spot outside of a tournament."

Living large: Palm Springs estate for sale

2399 Southridge Dr, Palm Springs, Calif.
For sale: $9.555 million

If you're unable to part with $50 million for Bob Hope's John Lautner-designed estate, how about another Palm Springs residence with its own significant architecture just a few houses away?

This modern home is located in prestigious Southridge, a gated enclave of 23 properties including former homes of actors Steve McQueen and William Holden, in addition to Hope's iconic home.

Designed by Edward Gedding, who worked with many high-profile clients in the 1970s and '80s, the residence sits on 2.25 acres and, like Hope's home, centers around a circular skylight.

The current owner picked up the home in 2002 and began a complete renovation, virtually redoing all the surfaces in the home, explains listing agent Bill Taylor of Saxony Real Estate.

"He didn?t remodel the exterior; it's so classic," Taylor said. "He really enhanced the interior to today?s standards."

The homeowner's renovation included opening up the floor plan, adding a bar and pool table area, as well as enhancing the sitting area. He also added a whopping 40 tons of Idaho quartz to the already 660 tons present throughout the structure.

The end result is something Taylor believes can't really be duplicated.

"The views and the quality, the finishes ... the location of the home: There's just nothing like it," he said. "The homeowner has great taste in what he does. You couldn't replicate the value."

A monthly payment on the home would be $34,376, calculated with today's mortgage rates and assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage.

By RFA -- (March 27, 2013)

Burma?s military chief on Wednesday rejected charges that the armed forces had committed war crimes in the past, following calls for international accountability for blatant rights violations by government soldiers during the five decades under military junta rule.

?We are a military that adheres to not only civil and martial laws and regulations, but also the Geneva Convention,? Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said in an address to mark Armed Forces Day at a ceremony attended for the first time by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Speaking in front of more than 6,000 troops gathered near the presidential palace, he said the military, known as the Tatmadaw, has never committed genocide and abides by international conventions.

?There is no such thing as genocide in the history of our Tatmadaw,? he said at the ceremony as jets, artillery, and tanks paraded through the capital Naypyidaw in a show of strength of the country?s military.

?Since we train our Tatmadaw men to acknowledge and adhere to the Geneva Convention, our Tatmadaw have never committed any war crimes and soldiers who [committed punishable acts] have had effective action taken against them according to military regulations.?

The U.N.?s special envoy for human rights in Burma has said rights violations committed by the military under junta rule could amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity and in 2010 recommended the U.N. establish a fact-finding commission to investigate the issue.

Rights groups have documented abuses in the military?s long-running war against armed ethnic groups, including forced labor, killings, torture, the displacement of ethnic minority people, and the use of rape as a weapon to terrorize them.

The military?s actions in some cases were cited as a form of genocide.

The Geneva Conventions of 1949 sets forth minimum standards for the proper treatment of persons within a warring party?s control, namely civilians and wounded and captured combatants.

The military will continue to play a ?leading role? in politics amid Burma?s transition toward democracy, and the armed forces must remain strong to protect the country?s constitution, commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing said.

Burma?s constitution, written in 2008 under junta rule, preserves former generals? power in the country and provides amnesty for junta members for actions they did in their official capacity.

Opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi?s attended the Armed Forces Day event for the first time, in a move underscoring the country?s transformation since the former junta ceded power to a reformist government two years ago.

She was accompanied by leaders of ethnic minority parties and watched the parade of soldiers and military hardware from a front-row seat.

Aung San Suu Kyi, a former dissident who spent the better part of two decades under house arrest by the military before joining parliament last year following reforms, has said that she remains ?fond? of the military.

The Armed Forces Day event commemorates Burma?s resistance against Japanese occupiers at the start of World War II and is remembered by opposition supporters as Revolution Day.

Asked why Aung San Suu Kyi attended the event, NLD parliamentarian Min Thu said the party leader thought Burma needs the military?s support for the country?s transition to democracy.

?I guess that Aung San Su Kyi attended the Armed Forces celebration because the commander-in-chief invited her to attend,? he said adding that she is the daughter of Burmese independence hero General Aung San who created the country?s army.

?She believes that a democratic country cannot be built without the military?s support,? he said.

This year?s Armed Forces Day came amid ongoing communal violence in central Burma following clashes in Meikhtila last week that killed at least 40 and left tens of thousands displaced. President Thein Sein has deployed the military to contain the violence in several areas.

In a statement commemorating Revolution Day, the NLD urged the Burmese people, political parties, and organization to work with patience toward stability and for the country?s development.

Global stocks, euro gain as Cyprus banks reopen

By Ellen Freilich

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Major stock markets recovered and the euro edged off a four-month low on Thursday, as banks in Cyprus reopened to relative calm following the island's controversial bailout.

On Wall Street, stocks moved in and out of positive territory in choppy, pre-holiday trade. <.n/>

There was little sign of the mass panic that some had feared as the country's banks reopened after a forced closure of almost two weeks, albeit with tight capital controls to prevent depositors from cleaning out their vaults.

"Contagion from Cyprus to other banks in the periphery will be limited", Barclays analysts Rajiv Setia and Laurent Fransolet said in a research note. But the decision to include senior debt holders and large depositors in the Cyprus bailout could have a "lasting effect" on the way investors perceive weaker euro area banks, they added.

Despite its rise, the euro was seen to be vulnerable to the Cyprus crisis which could encourage anxious investors to sell euro zone assets and seek the safety of the U.S. dollar.

PIMCO, the world's largest bond fund, said last week it had reduced allocations to the euro in response to the planned levy on bank deposits in Cyprus, citing the levy as "a significant departure" in euro zone policy from other reserve currencies.

Cyprus's 10 billion euro rescue deal with its European partners at the weekend is the first euro zone bailout to impose losses on bank depositors, and has raised the prospect of savers withdrawing their money from banks.

European Central Bank data showed some depositors began to take money out of their accounts in February when the possibility that depositors would take a haircut in a bailout deal, but the calm as bank employees returned to work helped settle early market jitters.

The euro, which has dropped around 2.0 percent over the last couple of weeks, climbed back above $1.28 on Thursday, up from a four-month low against the U.S. dollar <.dxy> and one-month low against the yen

Uncertainty has been amplified by an unexpected rise in German unemployment in March in data reported on Thursday, the lack of a government in Italy following inconclusive elections, and traditional end-of-quarter caution ahead of the Easter holiday.

But Germany's unemployment rise was countered by stronger retail sales and a surprise rebound in Italian business confidence.

European stock markets shrugged off their early nerves though as news of calm in Cyprus was reported. With benchmark stock indexes in London, Frankfurt and Paris all higher, the FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> climbed 0.6 percent.

U.S. Treasuries and German government bonds, assets investors turn to for safety slipped.

Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes last traded down 3/32 in price to yield 1.857 percent, up 1.2 basis points from Wednesday's close.

Treasuries held those losses after the U.S. government raised its reading on U.S. economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2012 while reporting a bigger-than-expected rise in weekly jobless claims in the latest week.

Gold slipped below $1,600 an ounce on Thursday, as banks reopened in Cyprus for the first time in two weeks without signs of panic withdrawals, sapping demand for low-risk assets.

Gold hit a one-month high of $1,616.36 last week on concerns the $10 billion euro rescue deal for Cyprus, which will leave big depositors and private bondholders with huge losses, could become a template for future bank bailouts in the euro zone.

Gold was down 0.5 percent to $1,597 an ounce by 9:24 a.m. EDT. Spot prices were still set for a one percent gain in March, their first monthly rise in six months. U.S. gold futures dropped 0.6 percent to $1,596.20 an ounce.

U.S. crude futures hovered above $96 a barrel early on Thursday as banks reopened in Cyprus. NYMEX crude for May delivery was down 5 cents at $96.53 a barrel by 1358 GMT.

London Brent crude for May delivery was down 4 cents at $109.29, after finishing 33 cents higher at $109.69 a barrel the previous session.

Stocks lower as Italy adds to European fears

Stocks were sharply lower Wednesday, with the Dow and S&P 500 pulling back from record levels, as political uncertainty in Italy sparked fresh worries over the euro zone and the euro dropped to a four-month low.

(Read More: Early Movers: WMT, CS, BA & More)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled nearly 100 points, dragged by Boeing and JPMorgan.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were also sharply lower. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, jumped above 13.

Major averages ended near their best ever levels on Tuesday, with the Dow posting a new high and S&P 500 finishing less than 2 points from its closing peak.

All key S&P sectors were firmly in the red, led by materials and industrials.

On the economic front, pending home sales slid 0.4 percent in February, according to the National Association of Realtors. Economists polled by Reuters expected a 0.9 percent decline, compared with a 4.5 percent rise in the prior month.

In Europe, political deadlock continued in Italy as the country's main leadership candidate Pier Luigi's Bersani reportedly said that only an "insane person" would want to govern the nation now, adding that Italy is "in a mess and faces a difficult year ahead."

Bersani made the remark after the anti-establishment "Five Star Movement" party headed by comedian Beppe Grillo again refused to form a coalition government with Bersani, thwarting his latest attempts to form a governing alliance.

A political stalemate since its inconclusive elections in late February has spiked concerns over how the country will handle its growing debt problems. Italy paid more to borrow over five years than it has since October at its latest auction, indicating worries over its financial situation.

The euro extended its losses below $1.28 against the U.S. greenback, its lowest level since late November.

Elsewhere in Europe, Cyprus is finalizing financial control measures to prevent a run on its banks, which have been shut for a week since the country agreed to a conditional 10 billion euro ($12.8 billion) bailout from international lenders. Cypriots have been lining up to withdraw cash from ATMs, with limits at 100 euros a day for some banks.

"Banks will open on Thursday ... We will look at the best way to limit the possibility of large sums of money leaving, and not imposing punitive conditions on the economy, businesses and individuals," Cypriot Finance Minister Michael Sarris said in an interview on Cypriot television.

"Cyprus is a reason to remind investors that Europe is a source of risk, but I'm not sure Cyprus itself is going to be enough [for a market pullback from the recent run-up]," said Thomas Lee, chief U.S. equity strategist at JPMorgan. "The big picture still points to a major secular bull market being underway, with at least another four years left, led by durable goods."

Trading is likely to be thin ahead of the three-day Easter weekend. U.S. markets will be closed Friday for Good Friday.

Wal-Mart declined after the world's largest retailer said that probes into alleged foreign bribery at its stores are likely to result in a financial loss. Separately, the company said it would start using stores to get Internet orders to shoppers faster, amid growing competition from online rivals such as Amazon.com.

Boeing edged lower as its 787 Dreamliners face a temporary ban on some of the transocean flights, which would be a costly new challenge for the company.

Cliffs Natural Resources plunged to lead the S&P 500 laggards after Morgan Stanley downgraded the iron ore and metallurgical coal producer to "underweight" from "equal-weight." Rivals Alpha Natural Resources and Peabody Energy also traded lower.

Weekly mortgage applications rebounded last week as interest rates pulled back for the first time in three weeks, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Paychex and Red Hat are among notable companies scheduled to report earnings after the closing bell.

Several members of the Federal Reserve are expected to speak throughout the day, including Chicago Fed President Charles Evans and Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren.

Meanwhile, crude oil inventories for last week will be released by the Energy Department at 10:30 am ET. Inventories rose by 1.31 million in the prior week.

The Treasury is slated to auction $35 billion in 5-year notes with the results available shortly after 1pm ET.

New type of solar structure cools buildings in full sunlight

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A Stanford team has designed an entirely new form of cooling panel that works even when the sun is shining. Such a panel could vastly improve the daylight cooling of buildings, cars and other structures by radiating sunlight back into the chilly vacuum of space.

Homes and buildings chilled without air conditioners. Car interiors that don't heat up in the summer sun. Tapping the frigid expanses of outer space to cool the planet. Science fiction, you say? Well, maybe not any more.

A team of researchers at Stanford has designed an entirely new form of cooling structure that cools even when the sun is shining. Such a structure could vastly improve the daylight cooling of buildings, cars and other structures by reflecting sunlight back into the chilly vacuum of space. Their paper describing the device was published March 5 in Nano Letters.

"People usually see space as a source of heat from the sun, but away from the sun outer space is really a cold, cold place," explained Shanhui Fan, professor of electrical engineering and the paper's senior author. "We've developed a new type of structure that reflects the vast majority of sunlight, while at the same time it sends heat into that coldness, which cools humanmade structures even in the day time."

The trick, from an engineering standpoint, is two-fold. First, the reflector has to reflect as much of the sunlight as possible. Poor reflectors absorb too much sunlight, heating up in the process and defeating the purpose of cooling.

The second challenge is that the structure must efficiently radiate heat back into space. Thus, the structure must emit thermal radiation very efficiently within a specific wavelength range in which the atmosphere is nearly transparent. Outside this range, Earth's atmosphere simply reflects the light back down. Most people are familiar with this phenomenon. It's better known as the greenhouse effect -- the cause of global climate change.

Two goals in one

The new structure accomplishes both goals. It is an effective a broadband mirror for solar light -- it reflects most of the sunlight. It also emits thermal radiation very efficiently within the crucial wavelength range needed to escape Earth's atmosphere.

Radiative cooling at nighttime has been studied extensively as a mitigation strategy for climate change, yet peak demand for cooling occurs in the daytime.

"No one had yet been able to surmount the challenges of daytime radiative cooling -- of cooling when the sun is shining," said Eden Rephaeli, a doctoral candidate in Fan's lab and a co-first-author of the paper. "It's a big hurdle."

The Stanford team has succeeded where others have come up short by turning to nanostructured photonic materials. These materials can be engineered to enhance or suppress light reflection in certain wavelengths.

"We've taken a very different approach compared to previous efforts in this field," said Aaswath Raman, a doctoral candidate in Fan's lab and a co-first-author of the paper. "We combine the thermal emitter and solar reflector into one device, making it both higher performance and much more robust and practically relevant. In particular, we're very excited because this design makes viable both industrial-scale and off-grid applications."

Using engineered nanophotonic materials the team was able to strongly suppress how much heat-inducing sunlight the panel absorbs, while it radiates heat very efficiently in the key frequency range necessary to escape Earth's atmosphere. The material is made of quartz and silicon carbide, both very weak absorbers of sunlight.

Net cooling power

The new device is capable of achieving a net cooling power in excess of 100 watts per square meter. By comparison, today's standard 10-percent-efficient solar panels generate the about the same amount of power. That means Fan's radiative cooling panels could theoretically be substituted on rooftops where existing solar panels feed electricity to air conditioning systems needed to cool the building.

To put it a different way, a typical one-story, single-family house with just 10 percent of its roof covered by radiative cooling panels could offset 35 percent its entire air conditioning needs during the hottest hours of the summer.

Radiative cooling has another profound advantage over all other cooling strategy such as air-conditioner. It is a passive technology. It requires no energy. It has no moving parts. It is easy to maintain. You put it on the roof or the sides of buildings and it starts working immediately.

A changing vision of cooling

Beyond the commercial implications, Fan and his collaborators foresee a broad potential social impact. Much of the human population on Earth lives in sun-drenched regions huddled around the equator. Electrical demand to drive air conditioners is skyrocketing in these places, presenting an economic and an environmental challenge. These areas tend to be poor and the power necessary to drive cooling usually means fossil-fuel power plants that compound the greenhouse gas problem.

"In addition to these regions, we can foresee applications for radiative cooling in off-the-grid areas of the developing world where air conditioning is not even possible at this time. There are large numbers of people who could benefit from such systems," Fan said.

pregnantwoman Stress During Pregnancy May Raise Heart Defect Risk for Baby

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, March 25 (HealthDay News) ? Stress in mothers before and during pregnancy may boost the risk of congenital heart defects in their children, more new evidence suggests. But the findings aren?t conclusive, and the effect ? if it exists ? appears to be small.

Still, ?there are several studies now that show an association,? said Dr. Edward McCabe, senior vice president and medical director of the March of Dimes, who is familiar with the results of the large new study. ?It suggests there needs to be continued investigation of this.?

McCabe said he?s not aware of any other research linking stress in mothers to a specific kind of birth defect.

Congenital heart defects, among the most common kinds of birth defect, include conditions such as holes in the heart and other kinds of problems. Most cases aren?t fatal, McCabe said, and physicians can repair some kinds of problems with surgery. In other cases, the defects don?t need to be fixed.

The new study follows up on previous research linking stress to this form of birth defect.

The researchers looked at nearly 1.8 million children born in Denmark from 1978 to 2008 and tried to find out if congenital heart defects were more common in kids born to a specific group of about 45,000 women. These were women who had lost a parent, sibling, child or partner between the approximate time of conception and delivery.

Women in that group were slightly more likely than the other women to give birth to a child with a congenital birth defect, researchers found. Study co-author Dr. Jorn Olsen, professor and chairman of the department of epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, said the findings take into account the possibility that congenital heart defects may run in families and have killed some of the relatives who died.

Why might stress in a mother cause birth defects? Animal studies have shown that stress during the development of a fetus could affect heart development, Olsen said.

It?s also possible, he said, that stress could lead women to do things that are risky to their unborn children, such as changing to a less healthy diet. McCabe said another possibility is that stress alters the DNA of the child in the womb.

In the big picture, Olsen said, ?this and other studies tell us to take care of pregnant women who experience severe stressful events shortly before or while they?re pregnant.?

For his part, McCabe said it?s important for pregnant women under stress to talk to their physicians about quitting smoking, which they may increase because they?re anxious. ?We can?t modify whether stress is going to happen in our lives,? he said, ?but we can modify certain effects of that stress.?

The study appeared online March 25 and in the April print issue of the journal Pediatrics. Although it showed an association between maternal stress and risk of congenital heart defects, it did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship.
