Hunting Dogs Retrieve Donations for Troops

BATH, N.Y. (WETM-18) - Hunters and dogs competed today to bring in ducks from a pond. They also brought in thousands of dollars for wounded soldiers returning to the country.

This dog can hunt. The dog is also chasing donations for American veterans severely hurt in combat. Organizers of the companion retriever hunting challenge at the Southern Tier outdoor show are giving their entry fees to the Wounded Warrior project. So hunters get to have fun learning from an expert:

"Just getting them to steady is the main thing when you're shooting," said hunter Michael Biasi.

But also help our men and women in the military.

"We want to help them in every way possible when they come back and have to get back into life with lost limbs and a number of situations,? said Carla Dawejko, an organizer of the outdoor show. ?So this helps them get back into life.?

The Wounded Warrior Project helps soldiers cope with stress and trauma and connect with their families. It also provides education and economic support, plus helps wounded men and women with medical treatment.

Entrance in the competition was limited but organizers expect to raise about $4,000 dollars between entry fees and donations received throughout the day. And all of the proceeds are going to the wounded warrior project.

?The program is important to all of us,? said challenge organizer and hunting expert Jim Beverly. ?It's our nations security and the people out there fighting for us today. There are people out there risking their lives today to allow us to do this.?

"It?s a good cause, a great cause. I'd do it again,? said Biasi. ?I ran two dogs in it today for the cause, so I?m totally behind it."

So while the dogs were having fun splashing around, they were also helping brave men and women just trying to keep their heads above water.
