Things You Need To Know About Private Tuition Session | Found ...

A tuition session, particularly the private one, lifts the pressure off a student as he or she needn?t keep up with the average learning pace in his or her class which can either be too slow or too fast. In this setup, the tutor can pay closer attention to the student thereby addressing the latter?s needs more effectively than a conventional classroom teacher can. By getting the much needed extra focus combined with the specialised attention made possible by this type of tuition session, a student can definitely achieve better grades than before.

Teaching a pupil at home has several advantages in store for everyone involved. What follows are but some of them. To begin with, homeschooling prevents the student from encountering negative influences that could possibly affect his or her attention retention. In a conventional classroom setup, negative influences are usual concerns..

Significantly improving one?s academic standing is another benefit of this type of tuition session where the student learns at his or her own pace. The tutor can closely monitor the pupil?s progress and reflect some adjustments in the lesson plan accordingly. The learning environment afforded by a private tuition session allows the home tutor to give regular as well as timely feedbacks since the focus is just on one student and not a whole class.

Furthermore, the student doesn?t feel burdened by the need to keep up with the fast learners or to tolerate the slow pacing of the others because the lessons taught in a private tuition session are tailored to his or her needs. It?s also possible to devote more time to learn a particular topic that he or she finds difficult to comprehend. These advantages lessen the chances that a student may feel depressed or frustrated.

Aside from the ones mentioned above, another advantage associated with homeschooling is the versatility it provides to the individuals involved. Because the schedule largely depends on the availability of the student and tutor, they have enough time to do other activities which can help them become well-rounded individuals. It is also possible to give adequate allowance in the event of sickness or other emergencies. Due to the various conveniences brought about by private tuition, it is not surprising to know that it?s a popular choice among parents, pupils and teachers alike.

Facebook Redesigns Groups To Be More Timeline-y and Purposeful, Less Spammy

Facebook Groups Timeline RedesignToday Facebook rolled out a limited redesign of Groups, featuring a big new Timeline-style cover image, and a prompt for users to prominently label "What should people post in this group?" See, if you're not careful, your intimate Facebook Groups can balloon in population and stray off topic generating annoying notifications for everyone. This redesign makes Groups feel more close knit, and will encourage them not to devolve into a chaotic array of kitten photos, political diatribes, and self-serving announcements. After all, that's what the news feed is for.

Just my pet cat and his pet hamster ? reginecelinaaa

I?ve mentioned before that I?m a cat person and sooooooo? for this Wishful Wednesday post, I?ll be blogging about my cat, Tony! :) I?m taking a break from studying so might as well blog to remove some stress.

It?s been said and proven that pets reduce stress. I can totally attest to that. Just look at how adorably snobbish Tony is. LOL~ He?s one of the most spoiled cats I know and one of the most stubborn too. I wonder where he gets it from.

I spotted him chilling at the veranda so I decided to intrude. :)

He didn?t look too happy to see me. :|

Why are you still here?

*Sigh* Even though you?re mean to me most of the time, Tony, I still love you.

Oh, by the way, check out my cat?s pet teddy bear hamster, Johnny: :)

You don?t have to worry about Johnny?s safety around Tony. See?

Living With Kids: Natalie Wright

You might recognize Natalie Wright from television; she?s more than a little famous! Her stylishly-salvaged home was recently featured on the Nate Berkus show in a House Proud segment to no one?s surprise. She has good ideas, Friends, and she isn?t afraid to make them happen, from hooks hung low to keys hung high, to accessible antiques and collections galore. One of Nate?s favorite things about Natalie?s home is exactly the same as mine: her $4 mail sorter in which she displays her vintage camera collection. Just add that to the list of one-of-a-kind creations Natalie has amassed to make her house a home. Enjoy the tour!

Q: Tell us about the lucky ones living in this well-loved home?

A: I have lived in my home for seven years with my husband and our four children, ages 13, 11, six, and three. We moved here from Maine, and even though it was quite a change for our family, we love living in Utah. My husband and I both have degrees in photography. He works in fine art publishing, and I have always been drawn towards portraiture and commercial work. My favorite hobby is trying new hobbies! I love to learn new things and am always trying something I have never done before.

Q: How did this house become your home?

A: When our family moved to Utah we needed to be in a home fast! We have a son who is disabled, and we actually chose our home entirely based on a local school we found?available?for him. We loved our house when we found it, but we also knew we would make it our own. I was always painting and changing our last home, and my husband and I knew we could make just about anything work for us.

I don?t get discouraged by architecture or aesthetics. If there is something in my home that bothers me, I change it. I don?t change it overnight though. I am a very thrifty and patient person. When I have an idea, the right piece of furniture or materials always seem to show up eventually.

Q: How would you describe your decorating aesthetic? How has it changed since kids entered the mix?

A: I am constantly asked what my style is. I have no idea! I am a photographer. I can tell you how to take great pictures of your house, but I cannot tell you what your home style is. I have dubbed my style really cool crap, which it is! I love to be different, and if I find something unique I just make it work.

When it comes to my whole family, they are really good about playing along. For example, a neighbor came over to help remove molding and do some electrical work a few days ago. I wasn?t home and he later laughed with me about how it didn?t faze my kids one bit there was a man in our home tearing up a wall. They are used to finding the furniture in different places, and sometimes even make really great?suggestions.

I have only one rule in my house when it comes to kids. Everything can be touched or played with. I want my children to be comfortable in their own home. We have a collection of vintage Fisher Price toys we play with every day. It?s the same for whoever enters our home. Keep your muddy shoes on if you like, and raid the fridge if you?re hungry. I should put that in vinyl?somewhere.

Q: What are your greatest sources for inspiration, design-wise or personally?

A: I love art. They say photographers are artists who just can?t draw, which I think is so true! I find so much?beauty?and inspiration in artwork.

I also find most of my inspiration when thrifting or shopping. I would much rather walk the aisles of a home?improvement?store than a shopping mall. I see inspiration in everything. Whether I am at a yard sale or thrift store, my brain is just spilling over with ideas. The only thing holding me back is time. And money! I never have enough time in the day to do it all. Sounds familiar, I?m sure!

Q: You have a serious knack with mixing vintage pieces with modern. What?s your secret?

A: I have a real appreciation for family history, and so many pieces in my home were inspired by my ancestors and family. I am also a total tech girl and I love modern technology. The two seem to have?collided?in my home. We just installed a vintage pull-down movie screen in our living room so we can project family movies with our iPhones. See what I mean?

My parents also graciously hand down to me many fun and unique pieces. My father was a builder, a mechanic, and quite the collector of unique tools and furniture. He has just learned to call me first before throwing anything away!

Q: Tell us about the Nate Berkus show! How did he find you? What was your favorite part of the experience?

A: I did not apply to be on the Nate Berkus Show. I adore the show, but being in front of a camera scares me to death. I actually received a message on Twitter from one of the producers. I thought it was a friend teasing me and wrote back scolding him for taking advantage of women who love and appreciate good DIY television. Turns out he was legit.

The whole experience happened so fast. As soon as I knew I was going to be on the show I literally had just a few days to film and send the footage on to New York. If you were to tell me I was going to be on national television I would have at least bought new clothes. I had two options. Go shopping and get my hair done, or get my house in order. My house won. Ironically I had just bought hair extensions a few days before. My hair was a mess. It?s was like buying new ice skates and performing at the Olympics the next day. My hair had not yet been worn in. I can look back now and laugh, but I certainly can never go back and fix my hair. I also change my look as much as I change my house. Three days after filming I cut my new hair to a more appropriate?length. Maybe it?s good no one will ever recognize me!

If I had to pick a favorite part of the whole?experience, it would have nothing to do with my home or my blog. My friends and family really stood by me, loved me,?hugged?me, and congratulated me. They really helped make me feel proud of what I have accomplished in my home, and also in my life. I love the?relationships I made during the process. Social networking is a very big part of what I do professionally, and I cherish more than anything the friendships and relationships I have formed. I love meeting new people and making new friends. I rarely turn down opportunities because?I know I will meet cool and unique people along the way.

Q: Your backyard is wonderful! Chickens! A modern playhouse! What?s your ritual out back? How do you spend time out there?

A: Unfortunately,?a love for anything tech-related is hereditary, and my kids are just as bad as I am! Our backyard is our attempt to unplug our children. So far it seems to be working. When the weather is nice we spend every evening we can back there. Our fire pit is our favorite and gets lighted nightly.

I would be lying if I said we haven?t tested our wi-fi to make sure it reaches back there, but most nights we do relax and spend time as a family. The fire pit and playhouse in our backyard seem to be the favorites with my kids.

As for the chickens, my husband refers to them as our food storage! Our six year old received them for her birthday last year. She had been begging for a puppy, and she got four pet chicks instead. Not a bit?disappointed, she has named them all! We often refer to her as the Chicken Whisperer. The chickens have just become a natural part of our family, and when neighbors tease us about them we remind them that their pet dog doesn?t produce?delicious?eggs every morning!

Q: Where do you shop for home decor?

A: Having lived in different places, this list would certainly vary by location. For where I live now, these are my favorite places to shop in order of greatest to least:

Surplus sales. Very few people know the ins-and-outs, but they are by far the best bottom dollar prices.

Yard sales. Fabulous prices, but I highly recommend going early to get the best deals. I go every Saturday in the summer with my friends.

Craigslist. I go online a few times a week and do a search just by my city name alone. I don?t like to drive far and I always leave my options open for a good deal, so a city search works for me.

Antique stores. We don?t have many here, but I always find something I love.

Thrift shops. The thrift stores here are unfortunately very picked through. I rarely find anything, but once in a great while I strike gold.

I will admit, I am rarely looking for something specific. I guess that?s why my home is constantly changing. I am always finding something I love, and I am really good at letting go of what it is replacing.

Q: Tell us about your favorite spot in your home; the one you?ve got just right.

A: A few years ago we turned our third-car garage into a photo studio. It is by far my favorite place in my home. It?s cold in the winter, and hot in the summer, but I tend to gravitate there at least once a day. I have a corner set aside just for my kids, and I never worry about the mess.

Everyone needs a place where they can be creative and just walk away when they need to. If you love to read, you should allow yourself one side table where you can pile books to the ceiling. My studio is that place for me. I would not say my studio is complete or finished either. It?s constantly changing to fit my photography needs, but that?s one thing I love about the space. I allow it to be my dumping grounds sometimes, and I feel inspired every time I walk into it.

Q: How much influence does your family have on decor?

A: I think of my?children?as the product testers in our home. If they feel welcome and relaxed, I know others will, too. I once decorated my teenage?daughter?s?room, and I was in love with the results. I felt the room was such a wonderful representation of my artistic style and possibilities. It photographed?beautifully, and I received wonderful feedback on my blog.

After a few weeks, I realized in her small bedroom how impractical it was to have her bed in the middle of the room. The rug I had chosen wasn?t at all comfortable even though it was such a lovely rug. I made some serious changes, and soon afterwards saw her spending enjoyable time alone in her room again. I will admit it was hard to alter the design of the room, but as I often tell people, we live here! Our home is not for show; we actually do throw our jackets on the floor and leave dirty dishes in the sink.

Q: Please finish the sentence: I wish I would have known?

A: I always wish I knew more about building homes. My father was a builder and I will always regret not spending more time with him at whatever?job-site?he was working on. When I was a teenager he let me use a paint sprayer to paint a basement wall. I was in heaven! I wish I would have paid more attention to how things worked, and learned early the tricks of the trade. It wasn?t until I was married and had my first?baby?that I fell in love again with house painting and home?improvement. Luckily my dad is just a phone call away and is always willing to coach me over the phone.

Just a few weeks ago he called me and gently said, ?Natalie, I just don?t know that gluing pennies all over your kitchen wall is such a good idea.? Yeah. He gives pretty good advice.

?-

Thank you, Natalie! And be sure to show your dad these projects made for pennies?with pennies!

Friends, don?t you love Natalie?s philosophy of carving out at least one space in our homes where we can be creative and just walk away from the mess when we?re through? An art room with a door is one of life?s loveliest inventions, don?t you think? Do you have a space like this, or do you clean up after each inspiration session?

P.S. ? You can find all the homes in my Living With Kids series here. If you?d like to share your home with us, drop me a note. I?d love to hear from you!

YouTube enlists big-name help to redefine channels

(AP) ? YouTube is enlisting Hollywood's help to reach a generation of viewers more familiar with smartphones than TV remotes.

The online video giant is aiming to create 25 hours of programming per day with the help of some of the top names in traditional TV. The Google-owned site is spreading its wealth among producers, directors, and other filmmakers, using a $100 million pot of seed money it committed last fall. The fund represents YouTube's largest spending on original content so far.

YouTube believes it is laying groundwork for the future. While the number of traditional TV watchers has leveled off in recent years, more and more people are watching video on mobile phones, tablets and computers, especially the 18- to 34-year-old age demographic that advertisers covert.

The idea is to create 96 additional YouTube channels, which are essentially artists' home pages, where viewers can see existing video clips and click "subscribe" to be notified when new content goes up.

Well-funded videos by a select roster of stars are likely to be more watchable than the average YouTube fare of cute cats and webcam monologues. YouTube is betting that a solid stream of good content will attract more revenue from advertisers, bring viewers back frequently and bolster its parent company's fledgling Web-connected-TV platform, Google TV.

The cash has enticed some of TV's biggest stars, including "Fast Five" director Justin Lin, who directs episodes of "Community," ''CSI" creator Anthony Zuiker and Nancy Tellem, the former president of CBS entertainment.

Zuiker is teaming up on a horror series for YouTube after observing his own family's behavior. His three pre-teen sons spend more time on phones, iPads and computers than watching TV these days.

"We want to jointly take the risk with YouTube and roll the dice on the future," Zuiker says. "The old regime is going to falter because everybody thinks the TV is the only device that really counts, and that's just not the case."

For producers, it's a chance to create shows that are completely free of meddling from major studios. They can also stay relevant with a younger crowd whose viewing is moving increasingly online.

Several new channels such as the extreme sports-focused Network A and Spanish-language Tutele have launched already. YouTube hopes to have them all up and running by this summer.

"This was really about galvanizing the ecosystem at large," says Alex Carloss, global head of original programming for YouTube. "We see the portfolio (of funded channels) really representing the best of TV meeting the best of the Web."

YouTube isn't the only Web video service that has started to pay for original content. Netflix Inc. recently launched the original series "Lilyhammer," while Hulu premiered "Battleground." But YouTube videos tend to be under 10 minutes, instead of fitting into traditional half-hour or hour-long TV slots. And aside from a few guidelines, ultimate control is given over to the artist, including what is uploaded and when new episodes appear.

YouTubers also get away with far edgier stuff than the middle finger that rapper M.I.A. flashed during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Although YouTube's entire investment is less than half of what some studios spend on one blockbuster movie, about a third of the new channels were awarded to scrappy YouTube veterans who already know how to make it big online while keeping production costs low.

YouTube expects to recoup what it spends on the grants by sharing ad revenue the new videos generate.

At Maker Studios, which received money for three new channels, the funds have turbo-charged an already teeming operation that has about 160 full-time staff spread across several buildings crammed with props and computers in the west Los Angeles suburb of Culver City.

On a recent visit, two scenes were being shot in an alley. One was for a parody of a Christmas movie trailer. The other was for a new series about a crime-fighting van called "Si, Es I, Pepe."

Maker cranks out about 300 YouTube videos each month at a bare-bones cost of about $1,000 each.

The studio's videos generate a whopping 500 million views each month, thanks largely to established hits that include Ray William Johnson's roundup of crazy videos and such viral giants as "Epic Rap Battles of History."

Advertisers pay up to $10 per thousand views for video ads that precede the featured content, according to TubeMogul, a major buyer of YouTube ads for the nation's biggest advertisers including Proctor & Gamble Co. and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Established YouTube partners share roughly half of their revenue with the site. So if Maker videos generate $1 or $2 in ad revenue per thousand views, it would just be scraping by.

Maker co-founder Danny Zappin, who quit film school to buy a high-end camera to start a career on YouTube, says it's a "tricky balance" to keep the studio's share of ad revenue higher than the cost of video-making. The undisclosed amount it got from YouTube, on top of the $1.5 million venture capital it received about a year ago, lets Maker put up more videos without waiting for the views and cash to roll in.

"It gives us resources and runway that we wouldn't otherwise have," Zappin said.

For other less-established players in online video, the money has given them an added reason to get involved.

Former CBS executive Tellem teamed up with TV entrepreneur Brian Bedol to create Bedrocket Media Ventures, an upstart production company behind several new YouTube channels, including Network A. The funding "allowed us, or caused us, to focus on YouTube ahead of other platforms," Bedol says.

Analysts believe YouTube has made a wise investment at a time ad rates for online video are rising.

YouTube can be successful with just a few big hits ? think of Rebecca Black's "Friday" ? even if thousands of videos fall flat. It's similar to the hit-or-miss approach to traditional TV and movies.

"The investor community does not look at this as money wasted," Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter says.

Since promising to share ad revenue with its most popular uploaders in 2007, YouTube has invested in original content mainly by paying for equipment and training new artists, but it was never as big as this.

Backing up its new strategy, YouTube also revamped its homepage to prioritize channels and recommendations above just the most-viewed videos. The revamp allows advertisers to target popular channels or categories of content more easily.

YouTube's funding plan takes a page from Apple Inc.'s playbook. When the iPhone maker launched its App Store in 2008, a $100 million seed fund created by Silicon Valley investor John Doerr spawned hundreds of thousands of new apps.

"Our developers are not software engineers," YouTube's vice president of global content partnerships, Robert Kyncl, told a convention in January. "Our developers are Hollywood stars, are online stars, are regular folks like you and I."

If nothing else, the injection of funds will spawn content never before been seen on any screen, large or small.

"Fast Five" director Lin, who is teaming up with YouTube stars Ryan Higa and Kevin "KevJumba" Wu on the "YOMYOMF" channel, said his focus is not to try to find audiences with stereotypical Asian-American content. Rather, the idea is to give a platform to people who have unique voices but haven't been heard yet.

He says Higa and Wu didn't follow any set rules when they jumped to popularity with a mix of oddball humor, brutal honesty and rap.

"They just did what they loved, and people came," Lin said. "If we're going to fail, I would rather go out with that philosophy."

New species of bat, Hipposideros griffini, discovered in Vietnam

ScienceDaily (Feb. 20, 2012) ? A distinctive echolocation frequency led to the discovery of a new species of bat within the genus Hipposideros. Although this bat is similar to the species Hipposideros armiger, differences in acoustics, size, and DNA between these bats led to the identification of the new species. This new member of the bat community, which has been found in two locations in Vietnam, has been given the scientific name Hipposideros griffini.

The current article of the Journal of Mammalogy reports on findings from a survey of bats in Vietnam over a span of three years. Eleven of 308 bats of the Hipposideros genus that were captured and handled for study displayed differing characteristics from all known taxa of Hipposideros and represent a new species.

Captured bats were measured for features such as forearm length, ear height, nose-leaf width, tooth row length, and body mass. Tissue samples were taken for genetic analysis. Recordings were made inside a flight tent, in front of caves, and under forest canopies, identifying calls of bats when they left their roosts and when they were foraging. Researchers used software for bat call analysis that can display color sonograms and measure frequencies.

The H. griffini bat has a smaller overall body size than its close cousin, H. armiger, and variations in the skull and teeth. Differences also appeared in the mitochondrial DNA collected from these bats. The echolocation frequencies of the new species range from 76.6 to 79.2 kHz, which is higher than frequencies of several H. armiger subspecies, which range from 64.7 to 71.4 kHz. Additional evidence shows that these two species are occupying the same geographical region yet have retained their separate identities.

H. griffini is named after the late Professor Donald Redfield Griffin of Rockefeller University in New York. Griffin was a leader in and essential contributor to bat echolocation research, which was key to identifying H. griffini as a new species. The proposed common name for this bat is "Griffin's leaf-nosed bat."

The new species was found at Cat Ba Island in Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam and in Chu Mom Ray National Park, situated on the mainland more than 600 miles (1,000 km) to the south. H. griffini joins about 70 other species within the genus Hipposideros.

NYPD Monitored Muslim Students All Over Northeast

NEW YORK -- The New York Police Department monitored Muslim college students far more broadly than previously known, at schools far beyond the city limits, including the Ivy League colleges of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, The Associated Press has learned.

Police talked with local authorities about professors 300 miles away in Buffalo and even sent an undercover agent on a whitewater rafting trip, where he recorded students' names and noted in police intelligence files how many times they prayed.

Detectives trawled Muslim student websites every day and, although professors and students had not been accused of any wrongdoing, their names were recorded in reports prepared for Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Asked about the monitoring, police spokesman Paul Browne provided a list of 12 people arrested or convicted on terrorism charges in the United States and abroad who had once been members of Muslim student associations, which the NYPD referred to as MSAs. Jesse Morton, who this month pleaded guilty to posting online threats against the creators of "South Park," had once tried to recruit followers at Stony Brook University on Long Island, Browne said.

"As a result, the NYPD deemed it prudent to get a better handle on what was occurring at MSAs," Browne said in an email. He said police monitored student websites and collected publicly available information, but did so only between 2006 and 2007.

"I see a violation of civil rights here," said Tanweer Haq, chaplain of the Muslim Student Association at Syracuse. "Nobody wants to be on the list of the FBI or the NYPD or whatever. Muslim students want to have their own lives, their own privacy and enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities that everybody else has."

In recent months, the AP has revealed secret programs the NYPD, built with help from the CIA, to monitor Muslims at the places where they eat, shop and worship. The AP also published details about how police placed undercover officers at Muslim student associations in colleges within the city limits; this revelation has outraged faculty and student groups.

Though the NYPD says it follows the same rules as the FBI, some of the NYPD's activities go beyond what the FBI is allowed to do.

Kelly and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg repeatedly have said that the police only follow legitimate leads about suspected criminal activity.

But the latest documents mention no wrongdoing by any students.

In one report, an undercover officer describes accompanying 18 Muslim students from the City College of New York on a whitewater rafting trip in upstate New York on April 21, 2008. The officer noted the names of attendees who were officers of the Muslim Student Association.

"In addition to the regularly scheduled events (Rafting), the group prayed at least four times a day, and much of the conversation was spent discussing Islam and was religious in nature," the report says.

Praying five times a day is one of the core traditions of Islam.

Jawad Rasul, one of the students on the trip, said he was stunned that his name was included in the police report.

"It forces me to look around wherever I am now," Rasul said.

But another student, Ali Ahmed, whom the NYPD said appeared to be in charge of the trip, said he understood the police department's concern.

"I can't blame them for doing their job," Ahmed said. "There's lots of Muslims doing some bad things and it gives a bad name to all of us, so they have to take their due diligence."

City College criticized the surveillance and said it was unaware the NYPD was watching students.

"The City College of New York does not accept or condone any investigation of any student organization based on the political or religious content of its ideas," the college said in a written statement. "Absent specific evidence linking a member of the City College community to criminal activity, we do not condone this kind of investigation."

Browne said undercover officers go wherever people they're investigating go. There is no indication that, in the nearly four years since the report, the NYPD brought charges connecting City College students to terrorism.

Student groups were of particular interest to the NYPD because they attract young Muslim men, a demographic that terrorist groups frequently draw from. Police worried about which Muslim scholars were influencing these students and feared that extracurricular activities such as paintball outings could be used as terrorist training.

The AP first reported in October that the NYPD had placed informants or undercover officers in the Muslim Student Associations at City College, Brooklyn College, Baruch College, Hunter College, City College of New York, Queens College, La Guardia Community College and St. John's University. All of those colleges are within the New York City limits.

A person familiar with the program, who like others insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it, said the NYPD also had a student informant at Syracuse.

Police also were interested in the Muslim student group at Rutgers, in New Brunswick, N.J. In 2009, undercover NYPD officers had a safe house in an apartment not far from campus. The operation was blown when the building superintendent stumbled upon the safe house and, thinking it was some sort of a terrorist cell, called 911.

The FBI responded and determined that monitoring Rutgers students was one of the operation's objectives, current and former federal officials said.

The Rutgers police chief at the time, Rhonda Harris, would not discuss the fallout. In a written statement, university spokesman E.J. Miranda said: "The university was not aware of this at the time and we have nothing to add on this matter."

Another NYPD intelligence report from Jan. 2, 2009, described a trip by three NYPD officers to Buffalo, where they met with a high-ranking member of the Erie County Sheriff's Department and agreed "to develop assets jointly in the Buffalo area, to act as listening posts within the ethnic Somalian community."

The sheriff's department official noted "that there are some Somali Professors and students at SUNY-Buffalo and it would be worthwhile to further analyze that population," the report says.

Browne said the NYPD did not follow that recommendation. A spokesman for the university, John DellaContrada, said the NYPD never contacted the administration. Sheriff's Departments spokeswoman Mary Murray could not immediately confirm the meeting or say whether the proposal went any further.

Another report, entitled "Weekly MSA Report" and dated Nov. 22, 2006, explained that officers from the NYPD's Cyber Intelligence unit visited the websites, blogs and forums of Muslim student associations as a "daily routine."

The universities included Yale; Columbia; the University of Pennsylvania; Syracuse; New York University; Clarkson University; the Newark and New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers; and the State University of New York campuses in Buffalo, Albany, Stony Brook and Potsdam, N.Y.; Queens College, Baruch College, Brooklyn College and La Guardia Community College.

"Students who advertised events or sent emails about regular events should not be worried about a `terrorism file' being kept on them. NYPD only investigated persons who we had reasonable suspicion to believe might be involved in unlawful activities," Browne said.

But such assurances seem to offer little comfort to some former students.

One University at Buffalo student, Adeela Khan, did end up in a police report after receiving an email on Nov. 9, 2006, announcing an upcoming Islamic conference in Toronto. The email said "highly respected scholars" would be attending, but did not say who or give any details of the program. Khan says she clicked "forward," sent it to a Yahoo chat group of fellow Muslims and promptly forgot about it.

"A couple people had gone the year prior and they said they had a really nice time, so I was just passing the information on forward. That's really all it was," said Khan, who has since graduated.

Khan was a board member of the Muslim Student Association at the University at Buffalo at the time. She says she never went to the conference, was not affiliated with it and had no idea who was speaking at it.

But officer Mahmood Ahmad of the NYPD's Cyber Intelligence Unit took notice and listed Khan in his weekly report for Kelly. The officer began researching the Toronto conference and found that one of the speakers, Tariq Ramadan, had his U.S. visa revoked in 2004. The U.S. government said it was because Ramadan had given money to a Palestinian group. It reinstated his visa in 2010.

The officer's report notes three other speakers. One, Siraj Wahaj, is a prominent but controversial New York imam who has attracted the attention of authorities for years. Prosecutors included his name on a 3 1/2-page list of people they said "may be alleged as co-conspirators" in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, though he was never charged.

The other two are Hamza Yusuf and Zaid Shakir, two of the nation's most prominent Muslim scholars. Both have lectured at top universities in the U.S.. Yusuf met with President George W. Bush at the White House following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The post about the academic event was enough to get Khan's name mentioned in the weekly MSA report, which was stamped "SECRET" in red letters and sent to Kelly's office.

There is no indication that the investigation went any further, or that Khan was ever implicated in anything. But she worries about being associated with the police report.

"It's just a waste of resources, if you ask me," she said. "I understand why they're doing it, but it's just kind of like a Catch-22. I'm not the one doing anything wrong."

The university said it was unaware its students were being monitored.

"UB does not conduct this kind of surveillance and if asked, UB would not voluntarily cooperate with such a request," the university said in a written statement. "As a public university, UB strongly supports the values of freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of religion, and a reasonable expectation of privacy."

The same Nov. 22, 2006, report also noted seminars announced on the websites of the Muslim student associations at New York University and Rutgers University's campus in Newark, N.J.

Browne, the police department spokesman, said intelligence analysts were interested in recruiting by the Islamic Thinkers Society, a New York-based group that wants to see the United States governed under Islamic law. Morton was a leader of the group and went to Stony Brook University's MSA to recruit students that same month.

"One thing that our open source searches were interested in determining at the time was, where do Islamic Thinkers Society go - in terms of MSAs for recruiting," Browne said.

Yale declined comment. The University of Pennsylvania did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Other colleges on the list said they worried the monitoring infringed on students' freedom of speech.

"Like New York City itself, American universities are admired across the globe as places that welcome a diversity of people and viewpoints. So we would obviously be concerned about anything that could chill our essential values of academic freedom or intrude on student privacy," Columbia University spokesman Robert Hornsby said in a written statement.

Danish Munir, an alumnus adviser for the University of Pennsylvania's Muslim Student Association, said he believes police are wasting their time by watching college students.

"What do they expect to find here?" Munir said. "These are all kids coming from rich families or good families, and they're just trying to make a living, have a good career, have a good college experience. It's a futile allocation of resources."

A ndrea Kay?s article in USAToday.com, "Speak well, write well, inspire others in 2012", highlights Ben and Kelly Decker?s "Decker Communications The Top Ten Best (and Worst) Communicators of 2011".Hollywood actor Charlie Sheenis ranked 3rd in the 10 Worst category because of his erratic communication and out-of-control public display of emotions, which destroyed his reputation and led to his career downfall.? The recently fired Hewlett-Packard CEO, Leo Apotheker, is 9th in the Worst list because of "not communicating a clear vision for HP, and not getting consensus and buy-in of his executive board".

If you want to avoid these mistakes, you have to understand how essential excellent communication skills are in leadership, organizations and interpersonal relations.

Compare these worst communicators with the successful leaders and communicators in the Top 10 Best list: Steve Jobs who created, communicated and completed his Apple visions clearly and colorfully; Howard Schultz who uses his superb communication skills to continually lead Starbucks to success; Virginia Rometty who became the first female CEO of IBM; and Warren Buffet who is not only a successful investor-businessman but also a good, respected and authentic communicator.

Poor communication skills could cost you a promotion, or even your job.? You need these skills to work well with everyone in the office, to be a good leader, to motivate others to get things done, and to convey effectively your products and services to customers.? Communication skills involve speaking, writing, listening, and presentation skills; all of which could break or make your career ? close or lose a deal, inspire or dispirit a team, and build or crumble confidence.

Remember, talking is not necessarily communicating.? Communicating is an exchange of thoughts, views, ideas, and insights with another person. It involves careful listening and skillful speaking, ? even if the person you?re interacting with is angry, sad, depressed or frustrated.? To avoid misunderstanding someone or being misunderstood, it?s important to develop good communication skills for all personal or professional interactions.
