3 suspects die in grenade blast during Kenya raid

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) ? Police say three terror suspects in Kenya's largest coastal city have been killed after a raid turned violent.

Aggrey Adoli, the top police official in the Mombasa area, said during a 2 a.m. raid Wednesday a terror suspect threw a grenade at officers, wounding four of them. He said three suspects were killed in the clash. He said the grenade caused the deaths.

Police said they recovered assault rifles, grenades and ammunition from the house.

Coastal Kenya has seen an increase in violence over the last year. Somali militants have carried out attacks and a separatist movement known as the Mombasa Republican Council has clashed with authorities.

Wednesday's violence came only hours after security officials launched a crackdown on the council.

Tyler Perry Joins Single Mom's Club

Though he?s just dipped his toes into acting outside of his usual self-run studio system with Alex Cross, Tyler Perry is still keeping his own brand going, with Lionsgate locking down the rights to Single Moms Club.

?

As is usual with most of his output ? the Madea entries, the Why Did I Get Married? pics ? Perry is set to write, direct, produce and star in the movie, which will find a group of single mothers bonded together after an incident at their kids? school.

The group helps them all, and they end up bonding, finding inner strength and ultimately battling a centuries? old demon that rises from the? All right, not the last bit. But come on? You?d watch Tyler Perry?s Single Moms Club Versus Cthulu, right? Admit it.

There?s no casting announced yet beyond the man himself, but he can usually attract some solid names.

Perry has most recently finished work on The Marriage Counselor, which will arrive next year and sadly unleashes the yet-to-be-determined acting talents of Kim Kardashian on the world. We?d still prefer Cthulu. As for Alex Cross (in which Perry inherits the mantle of the character originally played by Morgan Freeman), expect that one on November 30.

Biden, Ryan Continue Clash on Benghazi

President Obama and former Gov. Romney squared off last night and this morning their respective running mates continued to clash over what was perhaps the most heated moment of the debate - the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

While Romney accused the president of taking 14 days to call it an act of terror, Obama told him to "get the transcript" of his Rose Garden statement the day after the attack that lead to the death of Amb. Chris Stevens. It was at that moment when moderator Candy Crowley jumped in to say "[Obama] did call it an act of terror."

The Romney campaign said Crowley was wrong, and when I asked Vice President Biden about it he accused Romney of playing politics.

"Well, the response is it became so clear to the American people how governor Romney and the campaign continue to try to politicize?a tragedy and their strategy seems to be to try make it appear that the president didn't care or didn't know or was lying," Biden told me. "The fact of the matter is the president was clear. We are going to get to the bottom of this the whole world will know it."

In his Sept. 12 Rose Garden statement Obama said "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for."

When I asked Rep. Paul Ryan if Crowley was wrong, he said she had already backtracked and said Obama's remark "was a passing comment about acts of terror in general, it was not a claim that this was the result of a terrorist attack."

"If that was the case, George, then why send [UN Ambassador] Susan Rice out four days later to say this was the result of a spontaneous mob reacting to a YouTube video? Why go on "The View"? Why go on these other shows and not say the same thing? Look, that does not even hold water," Ryan said on "GMA." "What is troubling about this is as we learn more these facts just don't add up. That's why we need to get to the bottom of this, so we can prevent something like this from happening again."

We saw a different Obama take the stage last night. When I asked Biden about the president's change from the debate two weeks ago, he said the president he knows showed up.

"The guy passionately committed to doing something about the plight of the middle class, he was there last night," Biden told me.

"And I thought he did an incredible job of pointing out what he did, what we're going to do and I thought it was incredible that Governor Romney had nothing but a sketchy response to everything. I mean whether it was that young college kid asking him about a job he kept saying 'I want you to get a job, I want you to get a job, or whether it was about - this is the third debate we've had on their tax policy. They've yet to come up with a single solitary specific," he added.

But Biden wasn't the only VP contender claiming victory. Ryan said not only did Romney win, but he offered a vision.

"Growing the economy through energy, through better job training programs for getting people back to work, cutting the deficit, capping spending, getting small business growing again, this is our specific five-point plan and we've already shown repeatedly that our economic policies, like our tax reform, are revenue neutral and they're designed to simplify the tax code, to lower tax rates by closing loopholes primarily at the higher end so that we can get economic growth and job creation," he told me.

"That's what people saw. They saw a leader with a proven track record of bringing people together, getting things done, creating jobs and that is exactly why I think Mitt Romney again won this debate," Ryan said.

Beyond Bieber: Twitter improves student learning

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Twitter, best known as the 140-character social-networking site where Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga chit-chat with fans, has become a new literary format that is improving student learning, a new study argues.

Christine Greenhow, assistant professor of education at Michigan State University, found that college students who tweet as part of their instruction are more engaged with the course content and with the teacher and other students, and have higher grades.

"Tweeting can be thought of as a new literary practice," said Greenhow, who also studies the growing use of social media among high-schoolers. "It's changing the way we experience what we read and what we write."

In "Twitteracy: Tweeting as a New Literary Practice," Greenhow notes that Twitter use among U.S. teens has doubled in less than two years. There are now more than 200 million active users posting more than 175 million tweets a day, according to the study, which appears in the research journal Educational Forum.

Greenhow analyzed existing research and found that Twitter's real-time design allowed students and instructors to engage in sharing, collaboration, brainstorming and creation of a project. Other student benefits included learning to write concisely, conducting up-to-date research and even communicating directly with authors and researchers.

In teaching a college class that focuses on Twitter, Greenhow said her students participate more through the site than they do in a face-to-face class setting.

"The students get more engaged because they feel it is connected to something real, that it's not just learning for the sake of learning," Greenhow said. "It feels authentic to them."

Twitter, created in 2006, comes with its own set of rules, such as using hash tags, URL shorteners and leaving enough characters blank to allow retweets. Magazines, newspapers and TV shows run Twitter content, encouraging readers and viewers to engage in the conversation online.

"One of the ways we judge whether something is a new literary form or a new form of communication is whether it makes new social acts possible that weren't possible before," Greenhow said. "Has Twitter changed social practices and the way we communicate? I would say it has."

The Regan Family has been one of America's favorite families. They're featured on magazine covers, are constantly being interviewed and there's never a day where a new rumor isn't started about one of them.

Image

Richard Regan is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. Every movie that he's starred in has been a hit and all of his movies seem to be Blockbuster hits. His beautiful wife, Kathryn Regan, spent her young years as a supermodel and after marrying Richard, established a career as a children's book author and has done extremely well in the industry. The seemingly perfect couple has four children: Daughter 1 (age 24), Daughter 2 (age 21), Son 1 (age 19) and Daughter 3 (age 8).

  • Daughter 1 has established a career for herself as a musician and has been dating the football star, Boyfriend 1, for over two years. She's known to be the low-key one in the family, preferring to stay in on Friday nights rather than hit up the clubs or make social appearances. She comes across as mature and responsible, but sometimes cold.
  • Daughter 2 followed in both of her parents' footsteps, becoming a successful actress and model. Unlike her older sister, Daughter 2 enjoys the spotlight and doesn't miss a party or red carpet event. She's never been able to keep a stable relationship and while her parents just relate this to her being young, it's really because she's been in a secret relationship with another girl, Girlfriend 1. Richard and Kathryn are fairly traditional and knowing that one of their children were gay would not sit well.
  • Son 1 is the only Regan son and with that came a lot of expectations. Richard pushed him into sports at an early age and while he seemed to be a promising athlete, his teenage years led him onto a path of drugs and alcohol. He started off with only alcohol and marijuana but before he knew it, his addictions had spiraled out of control and no matter how many times his parents put him into private rehab programs, he continued to go back onto the drugs. He dropped out of high school during his junior year and was disowned by his father who felt that he was an embarrassment to the family. Son 1 spent the next two years living off of friends and the money that his mother and sisters would give him behind Richard's back. While Son 1's problems did attract media attention, Richard and Kathryn paid off the major magazines not to cover any stories on him and a few months after being kicked out of their home, the story on Son 1 died down in the media.
  • Daughter 3 is the baby of the family and while it has the benefits of getting nearly any tangible item that could be wished for, she lacks the family life that her older siblings experienced since she is the only child still living at home.

On Christmas Eve, Son 1 returned to his parents' house for the first time in two years. It was a tradition to spend Christmas Eve there, so the whole family was there enjoying the holiday's eve. The Regan estate was dressed in thousands of lights and decorations. The large fireplace crackled and the smell of freshly baked cookies circulated throughout the house as the family sat at the dinner table, finishing up their meal. When the doorbell rang, Richard decided to answer it as the house staff had already left. Son 1 was intoxicated to a point where he was barely coherent but his mind was clear enough to do one thing- the one thing that he had wanted to do since his father had disowned him. He shot at his father six times, although only four of them hit his father. The other two hit his mother who had run outside to see what was going on. Richard and Kathryn were both pronounced dead by the time that they reached the hospital and before the police showed up, Son 1 used the last round in his gun to take his own life.

Calling it a tragedy would be an understatement. On Christmas Eve, two of America's beloved celebrities were murdered by their own son who then committed suicide, leaving behind an emotionally broken family. Daughter 1, her boyfriend, Daughter 2 and her girlfriend are now forced to move back to their childhood home to care for their younger sister, and if the emotional trauma of losing both parents and their brother at once wasn't enough, they now must also face the media.

This reminds me greatly of that previous RP. Sound of Music. :P

I'll try to have a profile for the musician soon.

I am not, in fact, a woman. Apparently, I have to affirm this. :v

Sounds good! I actually based it off that and a roleplay "Smile for the Paparazzi" that I came up with with another user on here (BurningBridges), but unlike those, I'm hoping that this one doesn't die off after a week.

Well, there's my character--she's not quite done, still have a few details I'd like to add when I have the time, and of course I need to edit in names and details as other characters come in, but that's pretty much it.

iPhone-Maker: Yes, We Employed 14-Year-Olds - Business Insider

BEIJING (AP) ? The company that manufactures Apple's iPhone said Tuesday it found underage interns as young as 14 working at one of its factories in China.

Foxconn Technology Group said the interns were found by a company investigation at its factory in the eastern city of Yantai and were sent back to their schools. China's minimum legal working age is 16.

Foxconn, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., said it was investigating with schools how the interns were sent to its factory. It didn't say how many underage interns it found.

"We recognize that full responsibility for these violations rests with our company and we have apologized to each of the students for our role in this action," Foxconn said in a statement. "Any Foxconn employee found, through our investigation, to be responsible for these violations will have their employment immediately terminated."

Foxconn produces iPhones and iPads for Apple Inc. and also assembles products for Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. The company gave no indication what products were made in facilities where the interns worked.

A labor rights group, China Labor Watch, said in a statement that primary responsibility lay with schools involved but "Foxconn is also culpable for not confirming the ages of their workers."

Conditions in factories in China are a sensitive issue for foreign brands that outsource production of shoes, consumer electronics and other goods to local contractors. Last month, Foxconn suspended production for one day at a factory in the city of Taiyuan following a brawl by as many as 2,000 employees that injured 40 people.

Foxconn is one of China's biggest employers, with about 1.2 million employees in factories in several cities.

The company has an internship program that takes vocational students who work for three to six months in its factories, accompanied by teachers.

Foxconn faced a complaint in August that vocational students were compelled by their schools to work in its factories in China. Foxconn said the students were free to leave at any time.

The Fair Labor Association, which was hired by Apple to audit working conditions at Foxconn factories, said in August that improvements it recommended in March were being carried out ahead of schedule. That included verifying the ages of student interns.
