CDC: 24 E. coli illnesses linked to frozen foods

NEW YORK (AP) ? Health officials say at least 24 people have become sick from an outbreak of E. coli infections linked to frozen snack foods marketed to children.

No one has died, but eight people, mostly kids or teens, were hospitalized.

An investigation detected E. coli in an open package of Farm Rich brand frozen chicken quesadillas at an ill person's home.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported illnesses in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The Buffalo, N.Y.-based Rich Products Corp. has recalled quesadillas, mozzarella bites and other frozen products made in November.

BionicOpter dragonfly drone flutters about, blows minds

Festo isn't quite the household name that Boston Dynamics is. (And, really, we're not entirely sure Big Dog is a regular topic of conversation at dinner tables yet.) But, it certainly deserves just as much attention for the work they're doing with robotics. After crafting a machine last year that soared around like a herring gull, now the company has created BionicOpter. The 17.3-inch long dragonfly drone can flutter through the air in any direction, and even hover, just like its biological inspiration. Its four carbon fiber and foil wings beat up to 20 times per-second, propelling it through the air as if it were swimming rather than flying. Actually piloting the robo-bug is achieved through a smartphone app, but an on-board ARM-based microcontroller makes small adjustments to ensure stability during flight. There are a few important pieces of information we don't have just yet. For one, it's not clear how long the two-cell lithium ion battery will last, and pricing or availability are missing from the brochure (at the source link). Chances are though, you'll never be able to afford one any way. Thankfully you can at least see this marvel of engineering in action after the break.

HUMBLE, Texas (AP) ? The putter D.A. Points once took from his mother paid off nicely for him Thursday in the Houston Open.

Points opened with five straight birdies and wound up with an 8-under 64 on a pleasant morning with only moderate wind at Redstone Golf Club. He had a one-shot lead over Cameron Tringale and afternoon starter John Rollins with the late groups still on the course.

Rory McIlroy, in his final start before the Masters, was 3-over par after a double bogey on the par-5 eighth, then rallied for a 73 in his afternoon round.

Points first borrowed the Ping Anser from his mother during his junior years in Illinois, and like most golfers, he abandoned it once he stopped making putts. But he recently asked Ping to clean it up for him and add some weight. He also got a putting lesson ? no, not from Steve Stricker ? and he was on his way.

"Maybe I'm an idiot for not having used this putter the whole time," Points said. "It worked well today."

Points, whose only win came with actor Bill Murray at his side at the Pebble Beach National Pro-am, made all five of his opening birdies from inside 15 feet. He dropped only one shot along the way.

Angel Cabrera of Argentina, a two-time major champion who lives in Houston, was in the group at 66.

Phil Mickelson was at 4 under and right in the mix until he hit his tee shot into the water on the sixth hole and made double bogey, nearly hooked a 3-wood into the hazard on the next hole and three-putted for bogey, and then made bogey on the par-3 ninth from a bunker to wind up at 72.

"It was a disappointing finish," Mickelson said. "I feel really good with the putter, and I believe that as the tournament goes on, I'll get better."

Mickelson played with defending champion Hunter Mahan, who didn't hit the ball his best and it finally caught up with him at the end for a 74. Also in the group was Geoff Ogilvy, who needs to finish in the top 50 in the world to get into the Masters. Ogilvy is currently at No. 50, though he will lose spots through the formula this week. He had three penalty shots in his round of 73.

Lee Westwood hit two shots in the water and still salvaged a bogey and was in the large group at 68 that included Riviera winner John Merrick and Jimmy Walker.

Charles Howell III had a 69 in his bid to get into his hometown major at Augusta National. Howell would need to finish at least in fourth place alone to have any chance of moving into the top 50.

For Points, Tringale and so many others, they need a win to get into the Masters.

Points was just trying to see some reasonable results, having made only two cuts all year. He did manage to join a group of stars in the Tavistock Cup earlier this week, and upon leaving home for Tuesday, he grabbed a handful of putters. One of them once belonged to his mother.

Ping rep Matt Rollins had some weights added to the putter, and equally important was an impromptu lesson from Lamar golf coach Brian White.

"It's one of those things," Points said. "I holed some nice par putts yesterday in my pro-am. I didn't hit it great, but I made a few good putts and the ball was going in the hole with nice pace and rolling real tight. And I thought, 'All right, this might be the key that kind of gets me going.'"

That it did.

Mickelson, meanwhile, was going along nicely despite some errant tee shots, such as his one on the 12th hole. He sliced the tee shot so far left that it bounced off the cart path, across the 13th tee box and down a slope toward the bushes. He was about pin-high, only 100 yards left of the green. He hit wedge into about 15 feet and turned to the gallery and said, "It's all about angles."

The angles caught up with him. Mickelson tee shot on the sixth never cleared the water, leading to his sloppy finish.

Mickelson enjoys playing the Houston Open before the Masters, but this is a different year. Because of the way the calendar falls, the Masters is a week later, and Houston is now two weeks before the first major of the year. This is only the second time in the last 15 years that Mickelson won't be playing the week immediately before Augusta.

Lefty also plans to skip the week before the U.S. Open.

"It's a very unusual situation for me here," he said. "I usually like to play the before. I'm going to have to learn how to do that, now that we're not really having tournaments conducive to getting ready for those events. This is a good opportunity for me to work on getting prepared properly in another spot outside of a tournament."

Burma?s military chief on Wednesday rejected charges that the armed forces had committed war crimes in the past, following calls for international accountability for blatant rights violations by government soldiers during the five decades under military junta rule.

?We are a military that adheres to not only civil and martial laws and regulations, but also the Geneva Convention,? Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said in an address to mark Armed Forces Day at a ceremony attended for the first time by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Speaking in front of more than 6,000 troops gathered near the presidential palace, he said the military, known as the Tatmadaw, has never committed genocide and abides by international conventions.

?There is no such thing as genocide in the history of our Tatmadaw,? he said at the ceremony as jets, artillery, and tanks paraded through the capital Naypyidaw in a show of strength of the country?s military.

?Since we train our Tatmadaw men to acknowledge and adhere to the Geneva Convention, our Tatmadaw have never committed any war crimes and soldiers who [committed punishable acts] have had effective action taken against them according to military regulations.?

The U.N.?s special envoy for human rights in Burma has said rights violations committed by the military under junta rule could amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity and in 2010 recommended the U.N. establish a fact-finding commission to investigate the issue.

Rights groups have documented abuses in the military?s long-running war against armed ethnic groups, including forced labor, killings, torture, the displacement of ethnic minority people, and the use of rape as a weapon to terrorize them.

The military?s actions in some cases were cited as a form of genocide.

The Geneva Conventions of 1949 sets forth minimum standards for the proper treatment of persons within a warring party?s control, namely civilians and wounded and captured combatants.

The military will continue to play a ?leading role? in politics amid Burma?s transition toward democracy, and the armed forces must remain strong to protect the country?s constitution, commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing said.

Burma?s constitution, written in 2008 under junta rule, preserves former generals? power in the country and provides amnesty for junta members for actions they did in their official capacity.

Opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi?s attended the Armed Forces Day event for the first time, in a move underscoring the country?s transformation since the former junta ceded power to a reformist government two years ago.

She was accompanied by leaders of ethnic minority parties and watched the parade of soldiers and military hardware from a front-row seat.

Aung San Suu Kyi, a former dissident who spent the better part of two decades under house arrest by the military before joining parliament last year following reforms, has said that she remains ?fond? of the military.

The Armed Forces Day event commemorates Burma?s resistance against Japanese occupiers at the start of World War II and is remembered by opposition supporters as Revolution Day.

Asked why Aung San Suu Kyi attended the event, NLD parliamentarian Min Thu said the party leader thought Burma needs the military?s support for the country?s transition to democracy.

?I guess that Aung San Su Kyi attended the Armed Forces celebration because the commander-in-chief invited her to attend,? he said adding that she is the daughter of Burmese independence hero General Aung San who created the country?s army.

?She believes that a democratic country cannot be built without the military?s support,? he said.

This year?s Armed Forces Day came amid ongoing communal violence in central Burma following clashes in Meikhtila last week that killed at least 40 and left tens of thousands displaced. President Thein Sein has deployed the military to contain the violence in several areas.

In a statement commemorating Revolution Day, the NLD urged the Burmese people, political parties, and organization to work with patience toward stability and for the country?s development.

Global stocks, euro gain as Cyprus banks reopen

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Major stock markets recovered and the euro edged off a four-month low on Thursday, as banks in Cyprus reopened to relative calm following the island's controversial bailout.

On Wall Street, stocks moved in and out of positive territory in choppy, pre-holiday trade. <.n/>

There was little sign of the mass panic that some had feared as the country's banks reopened after a forced closure of almost two weeks, albeit with tight capital controls to prevent depositors from cleaning out their vaults.

"Contagion from Cyprus to other banks in the periphery will be limited", Barclays analysts Rajiv Setia and Laurent Fransolet said in a research note. But the decision to include senior debt holders and large depositors in the Cyprus bailout could have a "lasting effect" on the way investors perceive weaker euro area banks, they added.

Despite its rise, the euro was seen to be vulnerable to the Cyprus crisis which could encourage anxious investors to sell euro zone assets and seek the safety of the U.S. dollar.

PIMCO, the world's largest bond fund, said last week it had reduced allocations to the euro in response to the planned levy on bank deposits in Cyprus, citing the levy as "a significant departure" in euro zone policy from other reserve currencies.

Cyprus's 10 billion euro rescue deal with its European partners at the weekend is the first euro zone bailout to impose losses on bank depositors, and has raised the prospect of savers withdrawing their money from banks.

European Central Bank data showed some depositors began to take money out of their accounts in February when the possibility that depositors would take a haircut in a bailout deal, but the calm as bank employees returned to work helped settle early market jitters.

The euro, which has dropped around 2.0 percent over the last couple of weeks, climbed back above $1.28 on Thursday, up from a four-month low against the U.S. dollar <.dxy> and one-month low against the yen

Uncertainty has been amplified by an unexpected rise in German unemployment in March in data reported on Thursday, the lack of a government in Italy following inconclusive elections, and traditional end-of-quarter caution ahead of the Easter holiday.

But Germany's unemployment rise was countered by stronger retail sales and a surprise rebound in Italian business confidence.

European stock markets shrugged off their early nerves though as news of calm in Cyprus was reported. With benchmark stock indexes in London, Frankfurt and Paris all higher, the FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> climbed 0.6 percent.

U.S. Treasuries and German government bonds, assets investors turn to for safety slipped.

Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes last traded down 3/32 in price to yield 1.857 percent, up 1.2 basis points from Wednesday's close.

Treasuries held those losses after the U.S. government raised its reading on U.S. economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2012 while reporting a bigger-than-expected rise in weekly jobless claims in the latest week.

Gold slipped below $1,600 an ounce on Thursday, as banks reopened in Cyprus for the first time in two weeks without signs of panic withdrawals, sapping demand for low-risk assets.

Gold hit a one-month high of $1,616.36 last week on concerns the $10 billion euro rescue deal for Cyprus, which will leave big depositors and private bondholders with huge losses, could become a template for future bank bailouts in the euro zone.

Gold was down 0.5 percent to $1,597 an ounce by 9:24 a.m. EDT. Spot prices were still set for a one percent gain in March, their first monthly rise in six months. U.S. gold futures dropped 0.6 percent to $1,596.20 an ounce.

U.S. crude futures hovered above $96 a barrel early on Thursday as banks reopened in Cyprus. NYMEX crude for May delivery was down 5 cents at $96.53 a barrel by 1358 GMT.

London Brent crude for May delivery was down 4 cents at $109.29, after finishing 33 cents higher at $109.69 a barrel the previous session.
